Sure I’m 'the Mum' ... BUT Does That Mean I Have to do Everything?

Do you feel like you have to do everything? “Everything” being, the housework, the shopping, making lunch, cleaning the house, assisting with homework, organising baths, bed-time routine, organising social events, cooking dinner, cleaning up, before and after school drop offs and pickups, and the list goes on...

I have spoken with a lot of ladies who feel like they must do it or try to do it all. Today, where there is meant to be equality, why do you think, as working mums, we still feel like we are responsible for all aspects of day-to-day living for ourselves and everyone else?

Having reflected on this for some time now, it could be that we feel this way because of making the decision to have a career, be a mum, a partner and being all things to everything and everyone else, and therefore a sense of responsibility for what comes of making that decision. A case of ‘you made your bed, now lie in it’.

​It could be a need to be able to manage it all, because we saw our mums do that. Could it just be inherent, where the females take on that role and works? Or, could it be that we are just not able to say ‘I need support. Can you help me’? I guess there are a multitude of reasons why we feel the need or driven to do it all. 

Whatever the reason, unfortunately, the result of putting the pressure on ourselves can have a negative impact on our lives. The negative stuff starts creeping to the surface. The negative emotion that feels really uncomfortable and drives shitty behaviour bubbles up and before you know it you’re in a state of discomfort, feeling out of control, unbalanced and displaying behaviour that makes you feel crap. 

Well, it has happened to me. I have felt stressed, guilty, pissed off, resentful, feelings of not coping, overwhelmed and, at times, sheer exhaustion. I’ve even had moments of thinking it would be so much easier walking away, running away, just to have some time for myself.

Sound familiar?

What does all of this do to our bodies? Our minds? Our relationships? Well, the research is stating nothing but a negative impact on our body, mind and spirit. Imagine being able to manage the negative emotions to find clarity and peace in your life daily. Imagine not feeling agitated, cranky or tired.

Something I have worked on over the years, since having my daughter, is an intense feeling of guilt at times. Guilty because I have not been there for school drop off or pick up. Guilty because I haven’t been there straight after school to have afternoon tea, do homework and just enjoy being with her. Guilty because when you are cleaning the house, doing the shopping, I haven’t been spending time (quality time) with her and my partner.

I use EFT/Tapping daily to deal with my crazy busy life of working both for a company and my own business, being a partner, a mum, a daughter, a friend, running a household and continuing to study. EFT has enabled me to deal with moments where I would historically ‘fly through the roof’, lose my shit or end up in an argument with my partner or daughter. Don’t get me wrong. This does still happen, but I quickly manage it.  

The other beautiful thing is that EFT has stopped me being triggered at work over things in the past that would have found me questioning myself, my abilities, my self-worth. It has really allowed me to calmly deal with challenging situations, people and all the emotions that come with such a busy, time-challenged life.

I am grateful to be using such a powerful tool in my daily practice of mind, body, soul connection.
